I want to applaud the two council members who voted no to the proposed bond issue to fund the recreational assets project. No, I am not against recreation fields, or kids, but there are other pressing matters for the township to finalize.
Our township offices and library have been in limbo for over a decade, and there is no clear direction yet.
Library funding has been cut significantly, library hours have been drastically reduced and seven library staff members have been laid off.
Like many other municipalities in New Jersey, as well as around the country, we are trying to find our way in a precarious economy. To commit any money to this project, while the town offices and library project are unresolved, seems irresponsible.
In addition, while NJ knows what it’s projected deficit is for the upcoming fiscal year, the projected decrease in revenue in NJ leaves fiscal 2012–2013 very much in question making it even more important to proceed with caution.
As to the number of people in the community who might use the fields, I have no doubt it’s a large group, but not as large as the number of people who could use the library.
If the sluggish economy drags on for a while, more people may recognize the savings a great library like ours offer. Let’s be sure the fiscal house is truly in order before we take on any more debt.
To the residents who volunteer their time to help maintain the fields, thank you. It’s important, it’s necessary and it is appreciated. Maybe we could have people volunteer at the library and increase the hours.
