Deadline to run for BOE election is March 8

The deadline to file nominating petitions for election to the Mt. Laurel Board of Education is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, according to Assistant Superintendent for Business and Board Secretary Robert F. Wachter Jr.

Prospective candidates may obtain a school board candidate packet at the board office located in the Hattie Britt Board of Education Building, 330 Mt. Laurel Rd., between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. any normal business day.

The kit includes the necessary nominating petition forms as well as information on legal qualifications, campaign procedures, the role of board members in New Jersey, and the state Ethics Act relating to board members.

A sample kit is also available online through the New Jersey School Boards Association website at http://www.njsba.org/candidacy/?a=95.

During the April 27 annual school board elections, Mt. Laurel voters will be asked to fill three seats on the board of education for full three-year terms. The terms of Diane Blair, William Crowe Jr. and Margaret Haynes will expire in April.

Voters will be asked to fill a fourth seat for the one-year unexpired term vacated by the passing of Board Member Nancy Jones in November. Former Board Member Joanne Pelly was appointed to fill that seat until the April election.

By law, potential board members must have been a resident of Mt. Laurel for at least one year, must have the ability to read and write, have no interest in any contract with the board, and may not presently hold a position on the governing body of the municipality. In addition, candidates must be qualified registered voters.
