Buy a candy bar, help the troops

By ROBERT LINNEHAN

In between picking up lunchmeat and some paper towels at the supermarket, why not buy one or several extra items that a soldier could use while he or she defends America overseas? The Yellow Ribbon Club is holding two troop supply drives at the Marlton Super Fresh on Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13.

The drive on Saturday will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The local Yellow Ribbon Club collects items and puts together care packages to be sent overseas to the men and women in the armed forces. The group also organizes “welcome home” celebrations for returning veterans to the area.

Representatives from the Yellow Ribbon Club will be at the supermarket on both days with troop supply lists available for shoppers. The lists contain items that the troops need overseas for their everyday lives. Simple items such as deodorant, shaving cream, and body gel are needed in vast supplies for the troops.

“We are asking shoppers for their assistance. Shoppers can help during these times by picking up a supply list at the entrance from Yellow Ribbon Club volunteers. We kindly ask shoppers to pick up one or more U.S. troop items while they do their usual shopping,” said David Silver, a Yellow Ribbon Club representative. “When shoppers exit from their shopping trip, items can be dropped off to Yellow Ribbon Club volunteers where shoppers will receive a large Yellow Ribbon in thanks for their generous donation.”

The group has about 75 addresses to ship packages to and anywhere between 20 to 200 soldiers marked down to receive the items.

It’s the least local residents can do for the men and women defending the freedoms that everyone in America enjoys each day.

“We can do all of this and more because of the men and women who have bravely served this country. They have signed up to defend our way of life. Our troops and veterans have put their lives on the line so we can breathe that freedom,” Silver said.
