Monthly cooking classes at new, Jamaican eatery

Want to learn the ins and outs of Jamaican cooking? Local TV celebrity chef, Janet Davis, will be offering monthly cooking classes at her new Main Street restaurant offering Jamaican cuisine, Scotch Bonnets.

The new dining location will feature a series of lessons on making an array of authentic Jamaican dishes including plantains, cod fish cakes, rice and peas, and curry chicken.

Classes will be held on the fourth Monday of each month.

The first class in the series, called The Basics of Jamaican Cusine, will be held on Feb. 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the restaurant. This class will teach the basics of Jamaican culinary tradition and will explore the spices, seasonings, and herbs that give the Caribbean food its world-famous flavor.

In this instructional cooking class, participants will learn fun facts about Jamaican food, key Caribbean brands and labels, where to shop locally and online, and pantry must-haves for preparing a classic Jamaican meal anytime. The night’s menu includes plantains, cod fish cakes, rice and peas, and curry chicken.

Davis started Scotch Bonnets in 2004 as an off site catering company. She began teaching cooking classes at Kitchen Kapers and soon had her own series called “The Pepper Pot”, which aired on PBS’ WYBE in 2007. She has made numerous appearances on NBC and FOX and has been featured in other local media outlets.

To register for this class, contact the restaurant at 609–654–6006.
