The Voorhees School District was blindsided last week as the state cut 36 percent of its aid to the K-8 school district.
The majority of school districts in the state received cuts in their state aid funding, but many were only prepared for a 15 percent reduction. The 36 percent cut equals about $2.3 million dollars taken from the school district for its next budget.
For its 2009–10 school year budget, the district received $6.4 million from the state. The Eastern Regional High School district lost about 17 percent of its aid figures, losing about $1.6 million. Last year the Eastern Regional High School District received $9.9 million in state aid.
Coordinator of Elementary Programs Irene Afek said the next Board of Education meeting will be held on March 26. The budget and the cuts in state aid will be talked about in some length and detail, she said. Right now it’s unknown on how the district will handle the state aid reduction.
“We’re still working on how to accommodate for these cuts,” she said.
