Off to Neverland

By ROBERT LINNEHAN | The Voorhees Sun

The members of the Voorhees Middle School drama club will be flying to Neverland in style this week as the club’s production of Peter Pan will open Friday night at 7 p.m. The production will feature a unique flying system that has been featured in the Broadway production of Peter Pan for decades.

Leta Strain, director of the middle school drama club, said Flying by Foy has choreographed all of the production’s flying scenes and trained local fathers of some of the actors to work the controls for the show. The acclaimed flying company has used their rigging system to create the illusion of flight for several Broadway productions of Peter Pan, including the award winning shows that featured Mary Martin, Sandy Duncan, and Cathy Rigby.

It’s an incredible system that’s shrouded in secrecy, Strain said, which only adds to the illusion. David Hearn, flying director of Flying by Foy, attended a weekend rehearsal of the production and introduced the system to the actors. He choreographed the entire flying scenes and trained the fathers to use the system.
