Soup for the Soul

By AUBRIE GEORGE | The Moorestown Sun

This February, students in Moorestown High School’s Interact Club are offering local residents a chance to come in out of the cold and warm up with all-you-can-eat soup and bread while supporting a good cause.

MHS Interact will hold its 10th annual Soup for the Soul event on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church on Bridgeboro Road.

During the event, students will model an all-you-can-eat soup and bread buffet after a real soup kitchen. Residents can pay at the door or ahead of time and enjoy soups and breads donated by local restaurants.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Food Bank of South Jersey.

Junior Sarah Lowy, who is a co-chair for the event, said the event offers a warm and cozy setting with good food and live music performed by other MHS students.

With each ticket, everyone who attends also gets a raffle in order to try their hand at winning a selection of merchandise donated by local stores, Lowy said.

Lowy, who has been helping to run the event for the past two years, said the group hopes to increase turnout for the event this year. Last year, she said, a slow economy and other events going on at the same time may have kept some people away. Still, she said, the event was successful.

“It was definitely fun, it’s cool seeing other members of your community come out and support a cause,” Lowy said. “It’s just a fun thing to do on a cold day in the winter time on a Saturday.”

After lunch, the high school’s environmental club has offered to provide guests with dessert, Lowy said.

Lowy said the group doesn’t have a particular fund-raising goal this year but would like to bring in as much as possible for the local food bank.

“The food bank is a really good cause because it helps people in need in our surrounding community,” Lowy said. “It benefits people that are so close to us.”

In years past, Lowy said the group has brought in as much as $5,000 during the fund raiser.

Lowy said Interact does many events throughout the year that benefit and help others in need including powder puff football for charity in the fall. The group also sells bracelets made by children in another country and donates the proceeds back to that country to send students there to school.

“We also help out a lot with other events that go on in the community that Interact itself doesn’t put on but that help people that need help,” Lowy said.

With all of the events that Interact is involved with throughout the year, Lowy said Soup for the Soul is the club’s biggest event.

“This is a really cool way to do something for charity,” Lowy said. “It’s great to get involved in your community and this is a perfect way to start while at the same time supporting a good cause.”

Tickets for Soup for the Soul can be purchased ahead of time by contacting a Moorestown High School Interact member for presale tickets.

Presale tickets are $7 for adults.

Tickets can also be purchased at the door of the event for $9 each.

Tickets for children are $4 at the door and during presale.
