Preliminary budget ‘non-conforming’

By AUBRIE GEORGE | The Moorestown Sun

Township Manager Chris Schultz called the current 2009 preliminary budget “non-conforming” because it is currently greater than the state’s CAP laws, which mandate that budget cannot exceed 16 percent over the previous year.

The preliminary budget calls for a 36 percent increase, meaning that Council needs to bring the budget down before it can be legal. Even then, Mayor Dan Roccato said it would be false to infer that Council would find a16 percent acceptable.

Roccato said there is no target number for the rate at this time.

Workshop meetings held on Monday and Thursday called for input from residents — asking them to offer their ideas and comments on how to solve for the budget’s problems.

Council plans to hold more workshop meetings for the 2009 budget. The date, time and place for the next meeting, aimed tentatively for next week, will be announced as soon as it is determined.

A copy of the preliminary budget is available through the township’s Web site, www.moorestown.nj.us.

Check an upcoming print edition of The Sun for full coverage of Council’s meetings this week.
