I’ll let you in on a secret: Until recently, Maryland’s Eastern Shore was just a name on a map to me, lost among more famed beach destinations.
That changed one evening over coffee with an old travel buddy who was raving about the beauty of this part of Maryland. Then he mentioned the amazing seafood, and I knew it was time to pack my bags.
Quickly after, I set out on a journey to explore the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and boy, was I impressed.

Visiting Maryland’s Eastern Shore – My Favorite Eats
It’s fair to say that Maryland is synonymous with seafood, and while the crabcakes from Riverside Inn and Pappas Restaurants are legendary, there’s so much more to the food scene here. I was especially impressed with the flourishing farm-to-table culture, which highlights the region’s rich agricultural heritage.
One standout was The Bartlett Pear Inn. I decided to order something non-seafood and ended up having roasted chicken with vegetables and a decadent peach cobbler for dessert. It was a hearty, homey meal that was amplified by the restaurant’s cozy atmosphere.
Exploring the Best Eastern Shore Tourist Spots
The Eastern Shore is dotted with charming towns and villages. I wandered through the cobblestone streets of St. Michaels, surrounded by colorful colonial architecture. The town was full of quaint shops where I picked up a few knick-knacks.
I also stumbled upon the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, where I learned about the region’s rich maritime history and admired some impressive historic ships.
Easton, rich in history, provided its own gems. As I explored, I came across hidden alleyways and amazing courtyards. One of my favorite finds was the Academy Art Museum, which showcased a diverse collection of contemporary and traditional art.
I can’t forget my stroll along the waterfront in Chestertown. With its maritime atmosphere, it was perfect for watching sailboats glide by. I also took a detour to the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, a powerful and moving experience that shed light on the region’s role in the fight for freedom.
Beyond these wonderful towns, the Eastern Shore is blessed with natural beauty. I spent an afternoon at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, a haven for migratory birds and other wildlife. I hiked through the marshes, spotting herons, egrets, and even a bald eagle soaring overhead. It was a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Another highlight was my visit to Assateague Island National Seashore, a barrier island known for its wild horses and pristine beaches – it was not as impressive as whale watching at Newport Beach, but it was still a magical getaway.
Local Activities to Enjoy
I stayed in the area for a few days, so I got to experience a few activities to satisfy my adventure craving. While I didn’t do all of these, here are some of the fun things you can do during your trip to the Eastern Shore:
Exploring the Eastern Shore was an absolute delight, especially when I got to do it on foot and by bike. I hiked through lush forests in Tuckahoe State Park, along scenic coastlines on the Cross Island Trail at Kent Narrows, and across rolling farmland near Berlin.
I did not stop there; I also rented a bike and cycled along the Chesapeake Bay, enjoying the fresh air and the stunning waterfront views.
Kayaking and Paddleboarding
Water activities are plentiful here, too, especially in the Chesapeake Bay. I rented a kayak and explored the calm waters, paddling through marshes, along secluded coves, and past charming waterfront homes.
Fishing Trips
I’m no angler, and at most, I’ve only watched my dad do some fishing back home in Jersey as I was growing up. But I can say that the Eastern Shore is a haven for anglers (talked about this with my dad, and he agrees). The coastlines are abundant with fish populations and diverse waterways.
When I was in Kent Narrows, I visited the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center, where I learned that rockfish, bluefish, and flounder can be caught in the area.
Why Eastern Shore Maryland Should Be Your Next Place To Visit
I’ll be honest: I didn’t expect to fall head over heels for the Eastern Shore. I mean, I knew it had its charm, but I figured it would be all quaint towns and sleepy beaches. I’m glad I was wrong.
This place surprised me at every turn, especially with those waterfront spots where I enjoyed dining at some nice restaurants or simply soaking in the view. The people there are also genuinely friendly.
Overall, if you feel Baltimore or Annapolis is too urban, head to the Eastern Shore. Here, you can reconnect with nature, history, and maybe even yourself.
