A Traveler’s Guide to the Most Beautiful Lakes in Europe

The Best Lakes in Europe

If you’re planning a trip to Europe, why not take the opportunity to visit some of its most stunning lakes? I recently did just that, and it turned out to be one of the best travel decisions I’ve ever made.

Visiting the best lakes in Europe also allows you to immerse yourself in local culture because many of these lakes are surrounded by charming villages and historic sites.

So, come along with me as I share my experiences and tips for exploring some of the most beautiful lakes in Europe, and get ready to dive in (not literally, of course, unless you’re brave enough for those chilly alpine waters!).

Eibsee Lake, Germany

Eibsee Lake Germany

When in Germany, you just have to stop by Eibsee Lake, as it’s one of the most popular in Europe, mostly because of its scenic views and crystal clear water in different shades of green and blue. The lake is surrounded by majestic mountains and the tranquility I experienced here was like no other.

What To Do On Your Visit

  • Hike the Eibsee Loop: This trail circles the lake and it’s great for those who want to enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains and the crystal-clear water. It’s a moderate hike, but if you don’t feel like hiking, you can rent e-bikes and normal bikes in the area.
  • Take a Boat Ride: The water of the lake is simply inviting, and the best way to enjoy that is by swimming or riding on a boat. You can rent rowboats, paddle boats, or even take a guided tour.
  • Enjoy the Views: Simply relax and soak up the scenery. Find a cozy spot on the shore, pack a picnic, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
  • Experience Swinging on a Rope: Find your way near the Eibsee Hotel and ask around how you can get to the swinging rope. This can get you jumping about 5 meters into the water.

Lake Königssee, Germany

Lake Königssee Germany

Lake Königssee is located in the Berchtesgaden National Park, and it’s a fairytale fjord that’s as enchanting as it is beautiful. This one’s bigger than Eibsee Lake, and the water is more emerald green. Don’t worry, it’s still crystal-clear, so it’s clean.

Unlike Lake Eibsee, swimming isn’t allowed here, but just soaking in the view around the lake makes it so worth the visit.

What To Do at Lake Königssee

  • Take a Boat Trip: A boat trip on Lake Königssee is a must. The electric boats glide silently across the water, allowing you to fully appreciate the stunning scenery and the echoes of the mountains.
  • Visit St. Bartholomew’s Church: This charming church is located on a peninsula on the lake. It’s a popular pilgrimage site with beautiful Baroque architecture.
  • Hike to Malerwinkel: This scenic viewpoint offers panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. It’s a bit of a climb, so be sure you’re prepared for this one.

Lake Brienz, Switzerland

Lake Brienz Switzerland

If you’re in Switzerland, Lake Brienz is the best lake out there. Its water is a stunning shade of turquoise, and it’s surrounded by the Bernese Alps. You can also go around Brienz village, which is known for its wood carving. I bought a bear sculpture in a shop called Huggler Holzbildhauerei.

What to Do at Lake Brienz

  • Take a Dip: The water might be chilly, but there’s nothing quite like a refreshing swim in Lake Brienz on a hot summer day.
  • Go Kayaking or Ride a Boat: Rent a kayak and explore the lake at your own pace. You can also book a boat or ferry tour. Some of these tours also include a cruise to Lake Thun and Bernese Oberland.
  • Ride the Brienz Rothorn Bahn: This historic steam train takes you on a scenic journey to the Brienzer Rothorn mountain. It could give you a unique experience exploring the lake and its surroundings.

Lac Blanc, France

Lac Blanc France

Lac Blanc is a stunning alpine lake located in the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve near Chamonix-Mont-Blanc in France. You can get there by riding a cable car ride from Chamonix, followed by a hike through rugged terrain and breathtaking alpine meadows.

The lake’s crystal-clear waters mirror the towering peaks of the Mont Blanc Massif, and it’s easy to see why it’s a haven for photographers and nature lovers.

What to Do at Lac Blanc

  • Hike to the Lake: The hike to Lac Blanc is a bit challenging, but the rewards are well worth the effort. The trail winds through forests and meadows with stunning views of the lake.
  • Enjoy the Panoramic Views: Once you reach the lake, take time to soak up the scenery. The panoramic views of the surrounding mountains are simply breathtaking.
  • Try an Adventure Activity: If you’re feeling adventurous, Lac Blanc is a great place for rock climbing, paragliding, or even mountain biking.

Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

Plitvice Lakes Croatia

Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a true natural wonder. It is a network of interconnected lakes and waterfalls. Listening to the waterfalls alone is a relaxing experience, and with its views, my experience was just serene.

What to Do at Plitvice Lakes

  • Hike the Trails: The park offers a variety of hiking trails that range from leisurely strolls to challenging climbs.
  • Admire the Waterfalls: Plitvice Lakes is home to numerous waterfalls, each more impressive than the last. Take your time to admire their beauty and capture some photos.

Lake Ohrid, North Macedonia

Lake Ohrid North Macedonia

Lake Ohrid is predominantly located in North Macedonia but also touches the Albanian borders. This ancient lake is actually one of the oldest and deepest in Europe. The popular spot here is the Church of St. John at Kaneo, which is perched on a cliff overlooking the lake.

What to Do at Lake Ohrid

  • Visit the Monasteries: Aside from the Church of St. John, there are more churches, chapels, and monasteries in the area, like the Monastery of Saint Naum.
  • Go to the Old Bazaar: If you’re in the mood to see what the villages can offer, go to the Old Bazaar filled with shops and cafes.

Before you pack your bags and book those flights, here are a few tips to help you plan the perfect lake getaway:
