Welcome to our Jersey Gypsy column, where our resident travel reporter, Valentina, roams the globe in pursuit of stories. Currently, she’s in California, exploring the Hogwarts Light Show at the Universal Studios.
Okay, confession time – I may or may not have a wand collection that rivals Ollivander’s.
Yes, I’m a full-fledged Potterhead. So, when I landed in LA, there was only one place I had to visit – Universal Studios Hollywood.
While the entire park was a dream come true, the nighttime light show at Hogwarts Castle was the ultimate highlight.
The Wizarding World
The moment I walked through the archway into Hogsmeade, I was geeking out like never before. It felt like stepping straight into the Wizarding World. The snow-capped rooftops, cobblestone streets, and enchanting atmosphere were just…magical.
Hogsmeade
Naturally, my first stop was Honeydukes, and wow, did it deliver!
From Chocolate Frogs to Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans to Exploding Bonbons, it was a sugary paradise.
Next up was Ollivanders. While I already have my trusty wand, I couldn’t resist stepping inside to experience testing new ones. Spoiler alert: none chose me, but it was still magical to pretend.
Then, there was Zonko’s Joke Shop. It’s packed with all the fun stuff you’d expect, like Stink Bombs, Extendable Ears, and adorable Pygmy Puffs. If you’re a fan of novelty souvenirs, get your wallet ready.
I also knew that I couldn’t miss the Hogwarts Express. While it doesn’t really take you to Scotland, it’s pretty close to the real deal. The level of detail was impressive, from the authentic compartments to the trolley loaded with sweets.
Rides
My first ride was Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, located inside Hogwarts Castle, and it was absolutely mind-blowing. You get to soar through the castle grounds, encounter Dementors, and even play Quidditch!
I may or may not have screamed a few times, but it was 100% worth it.
Next, I hopped on the Flight of the Hippogriff. This one’s a bit tamer – a family-friendly coaster – but the views from the top were spectacular. Plus, you get a great look at Hagrid’s hut.
The Hogwarts Light Show
The castle lit up with a spectacular light show. Patterns danced across the walls in a burst of colors, and the special effects were nothing short of magical. It felt like stepping right into the Wizarding World, a scene straight out of a dream.
The show took us on a journey through Harry Potter’s story, from his first year at Hogwarts to the epic final battle with Voldemort. It featured all the iconic moments and beloved characters – Dumbledore, Hermione, Ron, and yes, even He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
The music played a huge role in creating the magic. Familiar Harry Potter themes were woven with original compositions that perfectly matched the mood of each scene. The sound effects were amazing! Every spell, creature sound, and explosion was so clear and alive that it felt like we were truly part of the action.
I don’t want to spoil all the surprises, but there were moments that left the entire crowd in awe. The Patronus scene was beautiful, and the final battle sequence had everyone holding their breath. It’s an experience that will stay with me forever.
Beyond the Light Show – Other Magical Moments
Of course, there’s so much more to Universal Studios in California than just the Harry Potter experience. I made sure to explore beyond Hogsmeade, and I was not disappointed.
Character Encounters
As I wandered through the park, I bumped into several familiar faces. I managed to snap a selfie with Hagrid, who, by the way, is even taller in person. And yes, I squealed with delight when I spotted a group of mischievous Minions causing chaos.
My favorite encounter, though? Definitely the Transformers. I’m not a huge fan of the franchise, but Optimus Prime gave me a fist bump and told me I had the “touch” of a hero.
Food and Drinks
Butterbeer might be the drink of choice in Hogsmeade, but Universal Studios offers plenty of other delights.
I had to try a Krusty Burger in Springfield (surprisingly delicious!), sip on a Duff Beer (not quite Butterbeer-level, but still fun), and even treat myself to a fancy cocktail at a rooftop bar overlooking the park.
Movie Magic in Action
Universal Studios is a real working movie studio, and the Studio Tour gives you a behind-the-scenes peek at its magic. I got to see iconic sets, soundstages, and even experience a simulated earthquake.
I also watched the Waterworld show, which was pure cheesy goodness. It was packed with explosions, stunts, and over-the-top acting.
Tips for Aspiring Wizards (and Muggles)
If you’re planning a trip to the Wizarding World, here are a few tips to make the most of your magical adventure:
- Invest in an Express Pass: If you’re short on time or want to minimize wait times, an Express Pass is a worthwhile investment.
- Enjoy the Magic: Fully embrace the magical atmosphere. Dress up in your favorite wizarding attire, practice spells with your wand, and enjoy the fantasy to the fullest.
- Plan for a Rainy Day: The magic doesn’t stop even when it rains. Bring a poncho from home, as buying one at the park can be pricey.

Officially a Hogwarts Graduate
The entire experience felt like a dream, especially the light show. It was unforgettable – easily one of those moments I wish I could relive for the first time all over again.
Even if you’re not a die-hard Potterhead, you’ll still find the experience magical. It’s out of this world and a must-visit for anyone seeking a bit of magic in their life.
