New Jersey American Water starts $8 million in water and sewer system improvements in Haddonfield

This month, New Jersey American Water began an $8 million “facelift” for a portion of the water and sewer system in Haddonfield. The project includes building three new sewer lift stations on Atlantic Avenue, Coles Mill Road and Roberts Avenue, and replacing the existing water and sewer utilities around these sites. Together these projects will better meet peak flows, improve service reliability, reduce service disruptions and relocate utilities out of environmentally sensitive areas.

“These improvements are a part of New Jersey American Water’s five-year plan to invest in system modernization within the Borough,” said Carmen Tierno, senior director of Operations for New Jersey American Water. “Since acquiring the systems in 2015, New Jersey American Water has already invested $8 million in improvements, and this latest series of projects continues the commitment we made to our customers.”

Work is scheduled to be done from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Work on weekends and evenings is not expected unless required to maintain the project schedule. Weather permitting, these projects, including final paving and restoration, will be completed by the end of Summer 2017.

There will be temporary traffic disruptions on the impacted roadways for each project. Traffic control will be coordinated with the Haddonfield Police Department. Service for trash, mail, school buses and emergency vehicles will be maintained during traffic disruptions.

Following are specific details for each project site:

Atlantic Avenue Sewer Lift Station

In addition to the new station, New Jersey American Water will be replacing existing water and sewer utilities on Centre Street from Reillywood Avenue to E. Upland Way; East Upland Way from Centre Street to Concord Drive; East Atlantic Avenue from East Upland Way to Crows Woods Loop; and Concord Drive from East Upland Way to Pennbrook Drive.

This project also includes installing new fire hydrants and replacing utility-owned service lines along the pipeline route. These improvements should enhance water service reliability and water flows for household consumption and fire protection.

“Customers in this area may experience a temporary service interruption while we are connecting the new main to the distribution system,” said Tierno. “Generally water service will be interrupted for less than 4 hours during this process, but we will notify these customers in advance so they can prepare.”

Tierno added that customers may also experience a slight temporary discoloration of water. If this happens, customers are advised to let a cold water tap in the home run until it is clear.

Coles Mill Road Sewer Lift Station

In addition to the replacement of the existing lift station, the existing water and sewer utilities on Pardee Lane from Grove Street to Coles Mill Road, and on Coles Mill Road to Grove Street will be replaced.

Roberts Avenue Sewer Lift Station Replacement

The existing station located adjacent to Roberts Avenue, near Wellington Avenue, has reached the end of its useful life and will be replaced and relocated out of an environmentally sensitive area. The project also includes improvements to the existing collection system with the installation of new gravity and force main piping.

New Jersey American Water advises pedestrians and drivers to take caution in the vicinity of the work sites. For questions or concerns about this project, please contact the Customer Service Center at (800) 272–1325.
