We have a rich history in Harrison Township, with settlements dating back 300 years, well before the birth of the nation. Today, we all know it as the best place to live and raise a family in the region. Each of us might cite different reasons for feeling that way. Whether it be the wonderful public schools, historic charm, proximity to everything, or great neighborhoods…take your pick. Clearly, one ingredient is the number of tremendous events we have in town throughout the year. These gatherings, year after year, serve as a binding force in the fabric of our community, making it the special place that it is.
We thank our township Recreation Commission and the Mullica Hill Business Association for their tireless effort in sponsoring these events on a continual basis. July and August serve as a break between the spring and fall seasons, which are loaded with activity. Things get started as soon as the kids are back in school, as we recognize Patriot Day on Sept. 11 with a 7 p.m. ceremony at our 9/11 Memorial site on Main Street. That will be followed by the Car Show on Sept. 2. Look for details on both events soon.
The second weekend in October is our annual Fall Festival and Civil War Reenactment. This is a cornerstone event in town featuring a fun experience for every member of the family. Get a taste of what it must have been like during the Civil War by visiting both a northern and southern camp. Hear and smell the real cannon fire and watch a live skirmish play out, right in front of you. And enjoy the food, music and crafts along Main Street while stopping by our hometown specialty shops.
The weekend is punctuated by the ever-popular Ghost Walk along Main Street, sponsored by the Harrison Township Historical Society, on Sunday night. Explore Mullica Hill’s haunted history, but prepare to be spooked!
October is capped by the Wizards, Witches and Wands Festival on the 26. Last year’s inaugural event was a huge success. Come and enjoy everything Harry Potter from broom and wand making to potion classes and sorting. Plus, photo ops with all your favorite characters.
November features our signature event, Lights on Main, on Nov. 30 this year. Come and join the ushering-in of the Christmas Season in our spectacular setting on Main Street. It’s always a night to remember that leaves no doubt why it’s been voted the “Best Event in Gloucester County” six years running. The night also kicks off the holiday shopping season on the street that culminates with Candlelight Shopping and the annual Christmas House Tour on Dec. 14. Get to see the inside of some of the incredible historic homes we drive by every day, as these homeowners go all out to decorate them for this annual event, celebrating its 45th anniversary.
