Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice to hold open house and day of educational workshops Nov. 14

The celebration will be held throughout the day at The Center in Voorhees on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice, headquartered in Marlton, has announced an open house and a day of educational workshops to celebrate National Hospice Awareness Month and The Samaritan Center at Voorhees’ first anniversary.

The celebration will be held at The Center in Voorhees on Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

This event, which is open to the public, will feature tours of The Samaritan Center at Voorhees, refreshments, and educational workshops about conversations related to end-of-life concerns, advance care planning, care giving for loved ones and caregiver burnout and self-care.

The event will also feature a sneak-peek screening of the documentary “Portraits of Professional Caregivers: Their Passion, Their Pain,” scheduled to air on PBS in December, followed by a discussion with the film’s director and co-producer, Vic Compher. The film features members of Samaritan’s staff, along with professional caregivers from a variety of first-responder- and service professions.

Also at the event is a workshop entitled “Caring for Your Loved One: Practical Tips from a Pro. Hosted by Eva Russell, Samaritan’s director of clinical support, the workship includes helpful information on caregiver self-care, bathing the bed-bound, mouth care and more.

Another workshop entitled “Timely Conversations: Questions to Ask Your Doctor” will be hosted by Dr. Stephen Goldfine, Samaritan’s chief medical officer. The workshop will feature a discussion on questions to discuss with a primary care physician and specialists at all stages of health and illness.

The day will also feature a screening of the PBS Frontline documentary “Being Mortal.” Based on the national best-selling book by Atul Gawande, this film and discussion explores what matters most to patients and families facing difficult treatment decisions.

Visitors can also view a new exhibit by local artists, Mixed Times Six, and enjoy light refreshments throughout the day.

“We are excited to celebrate the one-year anniversary of The Samaritan Center at Voorhees, a vital community resource for those requiring the inpatient level of hospice care, and honor National Hospice Awareness Month by offering a day of educational workshops for the community,” said Mary Ann Boccolini, Samaritan president/CEO. “This event highlights The Center as a resource, and gives both community members and professionals the opportunity to think and talk about their end-of-life healthcare wishes while learning valuable caregiving skills.”

The Samaritan Center at Voorhees, the first freestanding inpatient hospice center in Southern New Jersey, is especially designed for short stays at the inpatient level of hospice care as set forth in Medicare’s admission criteria.

The Center is located at 265 Route 73 South, Voorhees.
