I am proud that Voorhees residents have always answered the call when members of our community are in need.
As many of you know, a devastating fire occurred on Oct. 24 at the Avalon Court apartment complex. Thanks to the quick response and bravery of our Fire Department, Police Department and EMTs, all residents and their pets in the 20 units affected were safely evacuated. Three police officers and one firefighter were treated for smoke inhalation and released the same day.
Unfortunately, due to the severity of the fire, 20 Voorhees families have been displaced. The Red Cross has been providing temporary housing for the residents, but further support is needed.
Sadly, for one Voorhees family, this was the second time in four months that they lost their home. In July, their home was destroyed by fire as the result of lightning.

Also, many houses of worship in our community are accepting donations in the form of money, food and clothing to help these families.
The end of daylight saving time should remind us all to change the batteries in the smoke detectors in our homes to keep our families safe.
