GTPD’s Citizens Police Academy set for Jan. 25

The ten-week course is scheduled for Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m.

The following is a message from the Gloucester Township Police Department:

In a continuing effort to foster an even better police-community partnership, the Gloucester Township Police Department would like to invite any Gloucester Township resident who is 16-years-old or older to attend the Citizens Police Academy.

The Gloucester Township Police Department Citizens Police Academy is a free 10-week course that begins Jan. 25. This class will take place on Thursday evenings from 6:30 8:30 p.m. They course will run through March 29.

The course will include an overview of the police department, administration, communications, special operations, criminal investigations, traffic safety, K9, Special Response Team, Crime Scene Unit and much more. Also, all attendees of the Citizen Police Academy will receive CPR training.

The objective of the Citizen Police Academy is not to train an individual to be a Police Officer but to produce informed citizens. The citizens and police officers meet each other face-to-face in a friendly setting.

In the past, citizens have simply seen a uniform. Now, they have an understanding about the person behind the badge. Through participation in the Citizens Police Academy program, residents are promoting community involvement, which in and of itself is the most powerful force any law enforcement agency has in the fight against crime.

Graduates of the Citizen’s Police Academy may also apply for our newly developed volunteer program upon full completion of the course.

If you feel you would like to be part of this cooperative effort between the police and the community, and would like to receive a Citizens Police Academy application, please call the Gloucester Township Police Department Community Relations Bureau Officer Jenn McLaughlin at (856) 374–3513 or email [email protected].
