That and other items were presented at the latest council meeting
The Burlington Township Council meeting kicked off Nov. 14 with the presentation of the Patient Courage Award to 7-year-old resident Dominic Mazzio, who in 2013 was diagnosed with a neurological disorder known as transverse myelitis .
After waking up one day completely paralyzed, Mazzio spent months learning how to walk again. A year later, doctors found a brain tumor, but were able to stop the growth with proton radiation.
“It was rewarding for town officials to recognize Dominic. He’s an outstanding young man, and you can’t help but be inspired by him,” township administrator Walter Corter said. “The medical challenges he faces on a daily basis are more than all the people present last night will face in a lifetime.”
Burlington Township residents will be pleased to know that additional improvements are scheduled for Neck Road, 3 to 5 percent of which crosses over into another jurisdiction. An interlocal service agreement was made between Burlington Township and Springfield Township officials to make the road safer for travel.
Burlington Township repaired the entire section of Neck Road within its jurisdiction. But because there are fewer than 10 homes on Neck Road considered Springfield territory, officials said it would take several years for repairs on that small section of road to become a priority.
“There is a significant amount of traffic daily, including school buses, people commuting to work, people commuting to our schools and to do business in our community,” Corter said. “The road is in desperate need of being repaved.”
To expedite the road construction and patch hazardous potholes and alligatoring, Burlington Township agreed to pay half of the $97,000 cost. Springfield, which worked at Burlington Township’s request to secure grant funding, will cover the remaining half.
Paving on Old Neck Road will commence in 2018. Other construction resolutions were passed Wednesday night, including the approval of a change order allowing R.E. Pierson Construction Company to mill and overlay a number of streets.
