Temple professor will deliver the free lecture April 18
Immigration is a hot topic in the news and likely finds its way into the break room and dinner conversations. Become more informed about this timely subject directly from an immigration law expert as part of the “Pathways to Learning at Medford Leas” program.
Jan C. Ting, a professor of law at the Temple University Beasley School of Law who teaches in the areas of citizenship, immigration law and tax law, will deliver a free public lecture titled “Making Sense of U.S. Immigration Policy and Politics” Tuesday, April 18, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Medford Leas Medford Campus Theater.
Born to parents who immigrated to the United States, Ting notes that we should respect and admire immigrants as all Americans are either immigrants or descendants of ancestors who came from somewhere else. “But that’s not in question,” he says. “The question is: How many? Specifically, should we enforce a numerical limit on immigration to the United States, or alternatively, should we allow unlimited immigration, as we did for our first century?”
Ting will frame his lecture around this question while also examining the recent policy proposals and rhetoric tied to immigration and national security. He will discuss the recently proposed travel bans, sanctuary cities and the border wall. He will end with audience questions.
Professor Ting was Assistant Commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, DC from 1990 to 1993. He is currently a senior fellow and board member at the Center for Immigration Studies, and he blogs at newsworks.org/ting.
