Alexandra Himmel, a 2024 graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School (HMHS), was selected to receive a $2,500 STAR Scholarship from the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) Sisterhood. She was recommended by P.E.O. Chapter W of Haddonfield.
The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship was established in 2009 to provide scholarships for exceptional women in their final year of high school to attend an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the U.S. or Canada in the next academic year. The competitive STAR Scholarship is for women who exhibit excellence in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities, community service and potential for future success.
At HMHS, Himmel was founder and president of Haddon’s Helping Hands, a community-wide online tutoring program that connects high school student tutors with elementary school students needing academic support. She was twice elected vice president of the Student Body, and was a standout member of the Model UN and the Debate team, a student representative to the borough’s Human Relations Commission and an active member of the National Honor Society.
In her role as president of the 50/50 club, Himmel was instrumental in the planning of the annual “Through a Woman’s Eyes” art show. Himmel represented HMHS at Girls’ State and was a Girls Learn International Delegate to the 67th Annual United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. She is also a competitive foil fencer and competed in the Junior Olympics in her sport. Himmel will attend Duke University in the fall to pursue a degree in political science.
Her ultimate goal is to become a policy attorney.
