DCA data shows Burlington County still has lowest average county tax in New Jersey

Burlington County had the lowest average county tax in New Jersey again last year, according to the latest New Jersey Department of Community Affairs data.

Released earlier this month, the DCA data revealed the county portion of the average residential tax bill for a home assessed at $240,847 in Burlington County was $1,069 in 2023, which was the lowest among New Jersey’s 21 counties.

The next lowest was Morris County with an average county tax of $1,278. The average across the state was $1,746.

Burlington County also had the lowest average county tax in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, according to the DCA data.

County taxes made up 14.3 percent of the total tax bill in 2023. School taxes amounted to about 64.3 percent of the total tax bill, and municipal taxes amounted to 21.3 percent. All three percentages were nearly identical to those calculated by DCA in 2022.

The average total property tax bill in Burlington County last year, which includes county taxes and all school and municipal taxes, was $7,459, according to the DCA.

In addition to the DCA data, Moody’s Investors Services has repeatedly cited Burlington County’s budgeting, costs controls and “strong financial management” in reports maintaining the county’s outstanding credit rating. The agency’s latest report last November also cited the county’s “deep bench of civil servants and outside professionals” as helping to strengthen the county’s finances and deliver services.
