76er treats teens to shopping spree

Philadelphia 76ers player Kelly Oubre Jr. orchestrated a memorable shopping spree for about 30 teens from the Boys and Girls Club of Camden County at the Converse Outlet in Blackwood on Jan. 12.

During the two-hour private event, the teens were handed out gift cards and given the opportunity to splurge on sneakers, clothes and jackets, with a spending limit of up to $500 each. Oubre, accompanied by his wife, Shylynn, and their children, actively engaged with the teens, posing for photos and sharing high fives.

Michael Redden, an 11-year-old from Camden, expressed disbelief at the shopping experience as he clutched 12 pairs of sneakers and shopping bags on both arms at the checkout counter.

“I can’t believe this is happening,” he exclaimed.

The initiative – organized in collaboration with the Converse outlet – was aimed at uplifting and motivating the teenagers, instilling confidence and a sense of belonging. Oubre emphasized his commitment to giving back to the community, particularly kids. The Sixers’ practice facility is situated on the Camden waterfront, strengthening the team’s connection with the local community.

“This means a lot to them,” Vanessa Arroyo, a site coordinator with the Boys and Girls Club, said of the shopping event. “It gives them a chance to get things they don’t normally get.”

The collaboration between Oubre and his team, Converse and the Boys and Girls Club reflects the club’s commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of young people.
