The Burlington County Engineer’s Office has ordered a temporary closure of the Main Street Bridge (B4.61) over the north branch of the Pennsauken Creek due to the need for structural repairs.
The closure took effect on March 30 and is expected to remain in place for several weeks while repairs are made. The Burlington County Engineer’s Office, engineering consultants and contractors are currently working on a mitigation plan.
Work was already being performed on the bridge when the condition of the bridge pilings was discovered, prompting the engineer to order the closure. Motorists should avoid the area near the bridge if possible. Detours have been posted to route traffic to Route 73, Route 41 and Lenola Road.
The bridge is located on the Maple Shade-Moorestown border and was originally constructed in 1900 and reconstructed in 1930. More than 12,000 vehicles travel over the span daily on County Route 537, which turns into West Camden Avenue on the Moorestown side.
Burlington County is the largest county in New Jersey and is responsible for maintaining more than 500 miles of county roads, along with 411 bridges and 700 culverts.
