Haddonfield School District announces Child Find services

Community effort to find children in need of special education open to public

Do you have or know of a special child age 3-21 residing in the district who may have trouble keeping up with other children their same age? Are you aware of any children below the age of three with similar problems? If so, the Haddonfield School District can help.

Parents who suspect their child may have special needs may obtain free help from their local school district’s Child Study Team. Signs may include:

– Significant delays in acquiring language or significant speech problems

– Significant difficulty walking, running, or manipulating small objects

– Frequent health problems or disabilities present from birth

– Consistent trouble seeing or hearing

– Tendency toward temper tantrums or excessive anxiety/shyness

– Significant difficulty playing appropriately with other children

– Significant problems paying attention and listening

Child Find is a legal requirement that Local Education Agency (LEA) find all children who have disabilities and who may be entitled to special education services. Child Find covers every child from birth through age 21. The LEA must evaluate any child that it knows or suspects may have a disability. All New Jersey Public Schools are required to provide programs for children ages 3 to 21 with developmental delays and/or special needs. Other community agencies provide early intervention services for children from birth to three years. In order to continue to serve these children, the district must survey the community to find them.

Child Find is a community-wide effort to find and help any children between the ages of 3 to 21 who are in need of specialized education programs and services. Assessment, professional guidance, and a specialized program, if needed, are all available at no cost to parents.

Screening, professional guidance, and an educational program (if needed) are all available free of charge through the public school Child Study Team. If you need additional information about special education and/or related services, please contact Dr. Carmen Henderson, Director of Special Education at 429-4985 ext. 1112, [email protected] or write to Child Find, Child Study Team Offices, Haddonfield Memorial High School, 401 Kings Highway East, Haddonfield, NJ 08033
