Prevention Plus of Burlington County, Inc. will be hosting the first annual Strides Against Stigma 5K on April 22, 2023. This event promotes the commitment of being stigma-free against mental health disorders, substance use disorder and more.
The mental health crisis in America is increasing as is the prevalent issue of substance abuse and substance use disorder. As of March 2022, there were 679 deaths by suicide in New Jersey. As support services are increasing due to these statistics, stigma is still hindering people who suffer from mental health challenges from seeking support.
As of September 30, 2022, there have been 2,166 drug suspected deaths in New Jersey this year. One hundred fifteen of these deaths were in Burlington County. By reducing stigma in our communities, we can encourage and help people seek and find the support that they need.
All proceeds of this fundraiser will benefit Burlington County community members and residents by helping fund programs that are delivered throughout the county and in underserved areas. Prevention Plus serves Burlington County in the prevention of substance misuse and abuse and promotes the wellbeing of the county’s residents by educating and providing several programs in schools and the community as well as partnering agencies.
In addition to programming, Prevention Plus hosts safe community events and attends community and school wellness fairs. The non-profit agency also serves as the county’s Prevention Hub where residents, community members, and local agencies can obtain assistance in finding resources and support.
Prevention Plus is seeking sponsors to donate money or supplies to assist in covering the costs of this race. Such costs include professional timing, t-shirts, awards, refreshments, etc.
