Par ‘for’ the course: Fire department raises its own funds

Golf outing pays for maintenance at its building and property

The Palmyra Fire Department will host its annual golf outing fundraiser on Oct. 14, its first since the pandemic.

After a two-year pause because of COVID, the township fire department’s golf outing – one of  its main fundraisers – will make its return on Friday, Oct. 14.

The golf outing will take place at Rancocas Country Club in Willingboro; in its 15 years, it has also been held at clubs in Pennsauken and Riverton.

“The golf outing raises funds for maintenance of the fire department’s building and property,” said event chair and Fire Chief Richard Dreby. “Independence Fire Company (as the Palmyra Fire Company is often known) owns the building, which houses apparatus and gear.”

Dreby said funds raised from the golf outing offset the cost of maintenance, including utility bills, the parking area, necessary repairs and the department’s physical building.

Registering for the event can be done in groups of four.

“Foursomes come out and play one round of golf,” Dreby explained. “They are provided with dinner, beer, and soft drinks after the tournament.”

Registration for the golf outing will be at noon, with a modified shotgun start and tee-off time of 1 p.m. The event will conclude at about 5 p.m. There will be door prizes and winners will be named for best overall score, longest drive and closeness to the pin.

A special prize will be given to the first person who gets a hole in one: a new car that will be on display during the tournament. Event sponsors include Public Service Electric & Gas, Bradshaw Electric and Belle Ford. All corporate and business sponsors get a banner with a name on it and signs on each tea box.

Dreby looks forward to attending the golf outing each year.

“It’s an enjoyable afternoon of golf,” he noted. “The ability to have people come out and do what they’re used to doing, and to be in the company of each other, is refreshing.”

Admission for the golf outing is $125 for a single golfer, which includes one round of golf and dinner. The businessperson special is priced at $550, and includes four golfers, dinner and a hole sign at tee box. The corporate golf special is priced at $700 for four golfers, dinner, a hole sign at tee box and a corporate banner displayed at check in.

Rancocas Country Club is located at 12 Club Ridge Lane, Willingboro. The RSVP cutoff date is Oct. 1.
