One Year of StoryWalk

Outdoor installation engages readers with nature

Burlington County Library System (BCLS) is celebrating one year of StoryWalk, a permanent, outdoor installation created to promote physical activity, early literacy and family time together in nature.

Located at the Burlington County Library, StoryWalk consists of 20 pedestals installed along a mesmerizing natural trail around the amphitheater. Each pedestal displays laminated pages of a picture book, with active reading tips that help promote early literacy and questions for interactive fun. It’s not only an educational experience, but an enjoyable attraction that nurtures the joy of reading with family. And, since it’s seasonal, StoryWalk engages readers with different aspects of nature around them, often with a connection to the featured book’s content.

It’s been a very exciting year. Readers had fun in the forest with “Explorers of the Wild” by Cale Atkinson, explored a diverse world in the city with “Last Stop on Market Street” by Matt de la Pena, and said “Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn” with a story by Kenard Pak. Readers also learned about encouraging their friends to do art with “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds, and finding their own space in the world with “All Are Welcome” by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman.

This installation, created at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, Montpelier, Vermont, has successfully benefited thousands of readers during the past 12 months thanks to the help of the Friends of the Burlington County Library, Inc. and the Burlington County Parks Division.

StoryWalk is a permanent installation. Stop by to enjoy this month’s book “Hello, Fall!” by Deborah Diesen and Lucy Fleming while walking and talking with your children as you read and learn together.
