The Burlington County Commissioners encourage residents to ring in the new year by adopting a new companion from the County Animal Shelter.
The shelter at 35 Academy Drive in Westampton has numerous loveable pets looking to begin 2022 with a loving family. As an incentive, the shelter is waiving all adoption fees for adult dogs and cats for the month of January.
Typically, the shelter charges a fee of $75 for adult dogs and $45 for cats. Those fees are being waived as a New Year’s gift to the residents.
“New Year’s is the perfect time to adopt a dog or cat and with it all the joy and affection that comes with caring for a pet,” said Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Dan O’Connell, who is the Board’s liaison to the shelter. “Animal companions can also provide tremendous benefits to both physical and mental health. They can help us stay active, relieve stress and loneliness. We’re encouraging individuals and families to make appointments to visit our shelter and see all the wonderful animals that are available.”
Appointments are available Monday through Friday from noon to 3:30 p.m. Residents can also visit on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.

Online adoption forms are available with the profiles of each pet. Those interested in meeting a specific dog or cat during their shelter visit can get a head start by completing an adoption application.
All animals adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered and receive up-to-date vaccinations.
More than 1,182 cats and 411 dogs were adopted from the shelter in 2021 and over 380 others have been placed with rescue groups.
O’Connell, who adopted his dog Bingo from the shelter in 2021, said the shelter staff can work with residents to match them with the perfect pet.
“The staff and volunteers at our shelter do an incredible job of providing the animals with plenty of love and care, but what they want most is to find new families and homes for them,” he said. “For anyone thinking about a new pet, now is the perfect time to arrange a visit to the shelter to see the dogs and cats that are available.”
