Haddonfield announces impending acquisition of dog for K9 unit

Community can be involved by participating in online naming contest

Mayor Neal Rochford and Chief Jason Cutler announced that the Haddonfield Police Department will be acquiring a K9 for police purposes.

After over a year of research, the police department approached the Board of Commissioners for its approval in establishing a Police K9 Unit. Much consideration was given to type of K9, expense and usefulness of creating such a unit.

Ultimately, after reviewing a variety of cases where the K9 unit would have provided valuable assistance the Board of Commissioners granted permission to acquire a police bloodhound as recommended by the Police Department.

A bloodhound is a unique choice and will fit perfectly with mission goals established by the Police Department. Foremost, a bloodhound is the best breed for tracking missing or lost persons and/or persons wanted by the police, which would be a primary function. A bloodhound’s temperament ensures it will be an excellent community dog. We look forward to walking the Haddonfield Business District or Haddonfield Schools interacting with everyone.

The Police Department has secured a grant, vendor discounts and organizational donations for initial funding for the purchase and training of the unit. There will a minimum ongoing commitment food and veterinary costs which the department is researching donations and vendor discounts as well.

As a part of the community policing aspect, the department will be holding a naming contest, to engage the community for their input. Please follow the link below and give us your name suggestion: https://HaddonfieldPolice.formstack.com/forms/k9
