Mount Laurel Township’s Leadership Reflects Historic Diversity

Mount Laurel Township celebrated a historic milestone on January 3, 2025, with the swearing-in of Mayor Nikitas Moustakas.

The oath of office was administered by New Jersey State Assembly Majority Whip Carol Murphy in a ceremony attended by community members and local officials.

This event is a testament to Mount Laurel’s evolving diversity in leadership. In 2022, Kareem Pritchett made history as the township’s first African American mayor, breaking a barrier in its 150-year history.

The following year, Fozia Janjua became the first Muslim and South Asian woman to hold the position, setting another historic precedent.

Now, Mayor Moustakas, a first-generation immigrant from Greece, continues this tradition of inclusive representation, reflecting the township’s diverse and dynamic population.

The newly seated 2025 Township Council further exemplifies Mount Laurel’s commitment to diversity, including members of Black, Hispanic, and South Asian descent.

This leadership reflects the township’s demographic evolution and dedication to ensuring all residents have a voice in governance.

Mayor Moustakas, a Mount Laurel resident for over a decade, is also the founding member and managing partner of Moustakas Nelson LLC, a law firm based in Haddonfield.

His appointment marks another step forward in embracing diverse perspectives in local government, setting a precedent for the region.
