The Jersey Gypsy Takes on Texas – San Antonio’s River Walk

Walking Alongside the San Antonio River

Welcome to the Jersey Gypsy column, where our resident travel reporter, Valentina, roams the globe in pursuit of stories.

I’ve always believed that every city has its heartbeat, and in San Antonio, I felt it when walking along the San Antonio River. I’m Valentina, and on my latest trip, just a short walk from where I stayed in the historic King William District, I began my exploration of this iconic path.

It’s amazing to see how the River Walk blends nature with the energy of the city. Quiet mornings by the water shift into evenings filled with conversations and laughter from the nearby cafes and bars.

The mix of old buildings and modern spots along the way shows why locals and visitors alike treasure this area. Today, I’m going to share my experience.

Exploring the San Antonio River

Walking-Alongside-San-Antonio-River_INT02I was staying in a cute little Airbnb in the King William Historic District, just a short walk from the River Walk. I figured I’d start my exploration early in the morning before the crowds hit and the Texas sun reached its full scorching potential – it was a great decision.

To be honest, I initially thought the River Walk would be all about nature when I first read about it in relation to visiting Texas. But, as it turns out, it’s quite urban. It runs right through downtown, just a few blocks from the Alamo.

Spanning about 15 miles through the heart of San Antonio, the River Walk is a traveler’s delight, featuring striking architecture and charming bridges. Along the way, I decided to browse artsy shops nestled amid lush greenery and found many peaceful spots to relax and soak in the urban oasis around me.

My First Impressions

Based on the videos I’d seen online, I was expecting the place to be crowded. It was busy, but not in the stressful way I imagined. Maybe it was because I started walking around early, but there were already plenty of people out and about – strolling along the path, sipping coffee at outdoor cafes, and snapping photos.

Of course, I imagine it would be quite different to be here during a Spurs championship parade or other special occasion.

Taking a Boat Tour

Walking-Alongside-San-Antonio-River_INT01Taking a boat tour turned out to be one of the highlights of my visit to the River Walk. I joined a guided tour with Go Rio San Antonio River Cruises, boarding one of their charming little barges that gently glided along the river. Though it might be more of a touristy activity, I found it incredibly enriching because it offered a completely different view of the surroundings.

Our guide was quite the character, full of fun facts and cheesy jokes. But hey, it wouldn’t be a proper tourist experience without a little corniness, right?

This was also when I learned that the River Walk was originally constructed as a flood control measure. After a devastating flood in 1921 caused significant damage and loss of life, city architect Robert H. H. Hugman proposed transforming the San Antonio River into a scenic and commercial area to prevent future flooding.

Now, the River Walk is a bustling cultural and social hub, drawing millions each year. The tour lasted about 40 minutes and cost around $15, which I thought was a pretty good deal.

Things To Do at the San Antonio Riverwalk

There’s definitely more to the San Antonio River Walk than just taking a stroll. It’s about exploring, and I think you could spend three days here and still experience everything it has to offer.

Shopping: The River Walk is lined with a variety of shops, from souvenir stores to high-end boutiques. I picked up a few unique pieces of jewelry and a hand-painted scarf as souvenirs. I wish I could remember the shop’s name, but it was somewhere near the Arneson River Theatre.

Amazing restaurants: There are tons of restaurants along the River Walk, offering everything from casual Tex-Mex to upscale fine dining. I had a delicious lunch at Boudro’s, a Texas bistro with a beautiful patio overlooking the river. Many of these places reminded me of the time when I explored Australia’s restaurants with amazing food and drinks.

Grab a drink (or two): So yes, this is also why I didn’t finish the cocktail I had at Boudro’s. The thing is, the River Walk is home to a vibrant bar scene. There are plenty of options where you can enjoy a cocktail or a cold beer.

I stopped for a margarita at The Esquire Tavern, a historic bar with a cool, speakeasy vibe. I also went inside The Esquire – I didn’t plan to, but I heard it’s the oldest bar on the River Walk, and I just had to see what was inside.

Explore the museums: The River Walk is within walking distance of several museums, including the Briscoe Western Art Museum and the San Antonio Museum of Art. I spent some time in the afternoon wandering through the exhibits. The place wasn’t busy when I was there, so I really enjoyed it.

Looking Back at My San Antonio River Walk

As I strolled along the river, I couldn’t help but reflect on its history. Once a neglected waterway, the River Walk has been transformed into a thriving urban oasis. It’s a testament to the power of community and the importance of preserving our natural spaces.

My biggest takeaway from the River Walk? Slow down and savor the moment. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of exploring a new place, but sometimes, the best moments are the ones spent simply strolling, observing, and appreciating the beauty around you.
