I never would have pictured Australia as being so rich in destinations. Whether it’s nature, cityscapes, or food, there’s just so much to see and experience. I can confidently say that I’ve traveled enough to finally have some great recommendations for anyone planning to explore the country soon.

So, how did these places make the cut? Honestly, it’s the experiences I had that made them worth returning to. But of course, there are also spots that are simply so beautiful and scenic that I’d actively try to visit again.

Ready to explore my “Best of” list of Australian destinations? Read on.

My Favorite Places in Australia

  • Eau De Vie: A hidden speakeasy with amazing cocktails
  • Saint Peter: Where I rediscovered seafood and fell in love with sustainable dining
  • Beneath Driver Lane: A subterranean bar with live blues music and soulful cocktails
  • Madalena’s: A coastal gem serving up fresh, local flavors with a side of ocean views
  • The Ghan: A memorable and romantic train ride
  • Blue Mountains: Some of the most breathtaking views I’ve ever seen on a hike
  • The Great Barrier Reef: An underwater wonderland that took my breath away

What Makes These Places Worth Visiting

There are plenty of places I had a great time visiting, but I can say that not all of them are worth mentioning and recommending to others.

To make things easier, I decided to categorize them based on the cities I’ve visited. Let’s take a closer look.

Sydney

SydneySydney is full of energy and has such a cosmopolitan charm. I hit the ground running and explored iconic landmarks like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. I must say, the Opera House was a bit underwhelming – it was still nice to see in person, though.

I also visited Eau De Vie, a hidden speakeasy tucked away down a nondescript alley. The dimly lit bar, with its plush velvet seating and vintage decor, transported me back to the Prohibition era. This would be a great place to visit with someone special or with friends, for sure.

This is where I ordered the “Smoky Rob Roy,” a cocktail that arrived under a glass dome filled with smoke. It felt like I’d stepped into a scene from The Great Gatsby.

When it comes to food, Saint Peter is what truly stood out. It’s a restaurant that champions sustainable seafood. Their menu was essentially a love letter to the ocean, featuring fresh, local catches prepared with creativity and care.

Before leaving Sydney, I also took a stroll through the Royal Botanic Garden. I wouldn’t call it a favorite, but it’s a nice place to escape if you feel like Sydney’s cityscape isn’t exactly what you’re looking to explore.

Melbourne

MelbourneMelbourne is another bustling city with edgy laneways, hidden bars, and a thriving arts scene. I spent my days here exploring shops, sipping coffee in cafes, and discovering street art masterpieces. It’s definitely great for those traveling to experience culture.

There are so many amazing bars in Melbourne, but one that I enjoyed the most was Eau De Vie. I won’t forget my experience there!

No trip to Melbourne is complete without a visit to the Queen Victoria Market. It’s a wonderful marketplace, and I have a fond memory of wandering through the stalls, sampling local cheeses, fresh produce, and artisan crafts.

Perth

PerthPerth, with its laid-back coastal vibe and stunning beaches, was a welcome change of pace. I spent my days soaking up the sun, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and exploring the city’s charming neighborhoods.

I wandered through Kings Park and Botanic Garden, a true urban oasis with panoramic city views. The park was a haven of native flora and fauna, with walking trails, picnic spots, and even a treetop walk.

I also headed to Cottesloe Beach, a picture-perfect stretch of sand with turquoise waters and a relaxed atmosphere. I took a dip in the ocean, strolled along the shore, and watched the sunset paint the sky.

So, what about food? I recommend Madalena’s, a coastal gem with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. I savored a plate of Wadjemup yellowfin tuna, and its velvety texture was perfectly complemented by the ajo blanco and confit pepitas. I can’t wait to have that again when I go back.

Brisbane

My time in Brisbane was short but sweet. I explored the city’s alive cultural scene, strolled along the riverfront, and took a day trip to the nearby Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, where I cuddled a koala and learned about Australian wildlife.

But the highlight of my Brisbane experience was undoubtedly riding The Ghan, which took me from Brisbane to Adelaide. The journey spanned three days and two nights, and it gave me a full-blown experience of the Australian outback.

I still vividly remember watching the scenery transform from lush green fields to arid deserts while enjoying gourmet meals, comfortable accommodations, and impeccable service. If you’re visiting Australia, it should definitely be part of your itinerary.

New South Wales

New South WalesMy Blue Mountains adventure was a highlight of my time in New South Wales.

I spent my days hiking through ancient forests, marveling at breathtaking views, and discovering hidden waterfalls. The Three Sisters rock formation was a particular highlight, its majestic presence shrouded in Aboriginal legend.

Queensland

QueenslandOf course, I had to experience the Great Barrier Reef. I joined a snorkeling tour and was impressed by the underwater wonderland, to say the least.

It was a magical experience that left me feeling humbled and inspired by the beauty of nature.

Things I Learned When Exploring Australia

My Aussie adventure was more than just a trip – it was indeed a journey of discovery. I learned about the country’s rich history, diverse cultures, and breathtaking landscapes. But more than that, I learned more about myself; I learned that I can do so much more than I thought, even after weeks of traveling.

So, if you are planning a trip soon, here are my tips:

  • Embrace the unexpected: Australia is full of surprises, so be open to new experiences and learn to go with the flow. Mishaps may happen, but travelers should get used to them.
  • Respect the land and its people: Many places in Australia have a rich history and culture, so be mindful and respectful of their traditions.
  • Don’t be afraid to get lost: Some of my favorite memories were made when I wandered off the beaten path and discovered hidden gems. But of course, if you’re visiting places like the Blue Mountains, stick to the trails!
  • Say “yes” to new experiences: Whether it’s trying new food, taking a surfing lesson, or chatting with a local, saying “yes” can lead to unexpected adventures.
  • Take time to disconnect: In today’s hyper-connected world, it’s easy to get caught up in social media and technology. But sometimes, the best way to experience a new place is to unplug and simply be present in the moment.

Looking Back at My Australian Adventure

I can’t deny that Australia has absolutely captured a piece of my heart. There were so many great places to see, and restaurants and bars to try out. I’m sure there is still a lot more I could’ve done, so maybe I’ll just say that these are the places in Australia that are my favorites so far.

And yes, I’ll be traveling back to the land Down Under in the near future. That’s for sure.
