Shakespeare company stages ‘Puritan Widow’

“The Puritan Widow” will be performed by the Apocryphal Shakespeare Company at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, at Mabel Kay Senior Center on Walnut Street. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m.

The satiric comedy takes on hypocrisy in all its forms, with special attention to those who use religion as a means to worldly ends, ignoring the “golden rule” to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

The early-modern comedy pokes fun at the actions of an overly zealous Puritan widow and her family. When it was first put to paper in 1607, “The Puritan Widow” was credited to Shakespeare, but modern scholars agree that Thomas Middleton is the actual author.
