The Haddonfield Public Library is beginning to offer Fiero Code, a new learn-to-code software in June of this year. Through this web-based educational software, kids will learn computer programming skills through a series of tutorials and projects. They will work towards building websites, video games, phone apps, animations and more, all the while, learning how to become better problem solvers and critical thinkers.
“Fiero Code is a great addition to our programs at the library,” said library director, Eric Zino. “We’re all about giving kids a creative outlet and new skills they can apply in the real world.”
The software is geared for kids ages 8-18 and will guide students through a learning journey that includes project-based learning, story-based learning, and incorporates many fun gamification elements.
With Fiero Code’s help, Haddonfield Public Library will also be offering new after-school programs run by library staff. The first is a “code club” which is a weekly opportunity for students to code and learn together. The second program will be regular coding competitions run through the library where students have the chance to win prizes for coding projects they complete.
While traditionally, libraries have been a place to borrow books, they are increasingly transforming into a community resource center, offering classes, courses, and experiences for people of all ages and interests. Fiero fits with that mission.
