Deptford library announces lineup of summer events

With summer nearly here, the Deptford library has planned a plethora of events for the rest of June and the months of July and August.

Kids will be able to take advantage of summer reading programs, as well as story time classes planned for preschool, grades k-2, third and fifth grades and sixth through eighth grades. Kids will read a story and then do an activity such as a craft with their story’s theme.

“While enjoying a carefully selected story, children participate in questions about what we’re supposed to learn from it, what the characters are feeling, where the story takes place and others like that,” said children’s librarian Sarah Kramer.

The library has also planned events for adults, including a book club coloring and a bullet journaling program. Information about those programs and all calendar events is on the township website at www.deptfordpubliclibrary.org.

Adult coloring will take place on the first and third Friday of each month at 11 a.m.; the next is scheduled for Friday, July 5. The next bullet journaling event will take place on Wednesday, July 31, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The next young adult book club is scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, from 2 to 3 p.m.

“I’m excited to start a YA (young adult) book club this summer,” said librarian Michelle Burns. “On July 9 we’ll be discussing the book ‘Cinder,’ by Marissa Meyer. I’m teaching a study skills refresher course on (Tuesday) Aug. 20 (from 2 to 3 p.m.) to get kids back into a school mindset so they can hit the ground running on (Sunday) Sept. 1.

Burns will also lead a middle-school summer reading wrap-up of summer titles on Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 2 to 3 p.m. During the program, students can play games and there will also be a raffle of school supplies.

Notable for families is family trivia night on Wednesday, July 10, from 7 to 8 p.m., when teams of two to four will answer questions about everything from history to Disney movies. The event requires registration with a form available at burnsm@deptfordpubliclibrary.org.

The library is also planning what it calls a summer reading passport promotion. Residents who hold a library card can pick up a passport from Monday through Saturday, Aug. 31, to record their summer reading books. Reading three titles will earn the card holder entry into a September drawing for an adult and young adult $50 Amazon gift card.
