The 55-and-older community will hold the June 29 barbecue, sponsored by the township’s parks and recreation department.

Deptford will host a free neighborhood barbeque at the Lakebridge 55-and-older community from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 29.

Burgers and hot dogs will be served at the neighborhood’s own Lakebridge Community Center to its residents and to nearby homes. The event is sponsored by the Deptford Parks and Recreation Department.

The goal of the barbecue is to bring the community together and acquaint it with the township’s elected officials – including council members – in a non-formal environment.

“It’s important for the community as a whole,” Mayor Paul Medany said. “We realize a lot of folks can’t make it to council meetings to meet us.”

The event is part of a summer schedule in Deptford that includes family movie nights and the Senior Summer Fun Day on Thursday, Aug. 15. The barbecue is the second of four planned in neighborhoods around the township; the first took place on Memorial Day in the Oak Valley development.

The third barbecue will take place in the Locust Grove section of the township on Saturday, July 13, from noon to 3 p.m., and the last will happen during the food truck festival at Deptford Memorial Park – formerly known as Fasola Park – on Saturday, Aug. 24, from noon to 4 p.m. The park sits behind the Bexhill Farms neighborhood.

“We have so many neighborhoods and around 32,000 people living in Deptford,” Medany noted of the schedule. “We want to make sure that each one has a chance to host one at some point. Each year, we try to have around five of them.”

The goal, much like the Lakebridge barbecue, is to foster community spirit in the township. Citing the Aug. 24 event, Medany emphasized that goal.

“That is one of our biggest events of the year,” he said. “We wanted people to come and connect with the community in a relaxed atmosphere.”
