After a COVID interruption of several years, the Haddonfield Japan Exchange continued its international cultural program in 2023 and is seeking host families for this year.
Families will host 20 students from Sendai, Japan, who will arrive on Friday, July 19 and return home on Wednesday, July 31. The following is what is required of host families:
- Provide a bedroom or a shared bedroom with someone of like gender.
- Provide breakfast and dinner on most days, with an occasional brown-bag lunch.
- Be certain your guest arrives at borough hall by 9 a.m. on most days.
- Have a teenage student in your home (not needed for chaperones).
- Share your family activities on weekends.
- Be willing to participate in evening classes to learn about Japanese language, customs and culture.
- Agree to have a committee member look at the guest bedroom in your home.
Hosts will be guests for a farewell dinner at Tavistock and visiting students are given priority consideration for next year’s exchange. Host families also gain insight into Japanese customs and lifestyles and their sons or daughters are invited to participate in most daily activities, such as trips to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.
