The women at Gettysburg

The Historical Society of Haddonfield will host its next free program at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22 at the Lutheran Church, 204 Wayne Ave.

There is no fee to attend, but participants are asked to bring donations for the church’s food pantry. Local historian Jane Peters Estes will address the question, “Where were the women during the Battle of Gettysburg?”

They were, Estes notes, right there, bringing succor to troops, recording the historic actions of those crucial days and serving as soldiers themselves. Their actions accounted for the only recorded civilian death in the battle.

Estes focuses on primary sources, including letters and journals and other contemporary accounts.
