A Deptford High senior was arrested on March 8 and the school went into a brief lockdown after a School Resource Officer (SRO) determined that a photograph of the youth holding what appeared to be a gun inside a school bathroom was a fake that was then disseminated on social media, police said.
Officers at the student’s Deptford residence later found a plastic toy gun they believe was the same as the object the suspect appeared to be holding in the photo, police say, and he was arrested without incident. Police have not identified specific charges against the youth, who remains in custody.
Deptford police praised the actions of teachers, students, staff and faculty of Deptford High – as well as SRO Richard Rodgers – for maintaining protocol and coordinating with the police department during the lockdown.
