The post is the setting for weekly Harrison Township Active Adults chair yoga and chair strength training classes.

In order to provide Mullica Hill’s seniors 55 and older with an avenue for exercise, the Harrison Township Active Adults group is offering two weekly classes at American Legion Post 452.

The class scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 20 will feature chair yoga, which is said to be easier on the body than regular yoga. The class will be from 11 a.m. to noon.

“Chair yoga is a wonderful practice that helps relax the mind and gently mobilize the body and joints, especially those that may not be used frequently,” says Active Adults Coordinator Debbie Wagner. “It’s an excellent choice for individuals seeking a mindful movement experience while remaining seated.”

The session on Thursday, Feb. 22, will feature chair strength-training sessions that focus less on relaxing the mind and more on building muscle strength.

“On the other hand, chair strength training focuses on enhancing muscle flexibility and promoting a broader range of motion,” Wagner explained. “Both programs have been around for quite some time …”

The exercise programs will be taught by certified instructors and equipment is provided. Their is a fee to attend.

The main goal of the classes, according to Wagner, is to raise awareness for senior health and encourage more seniors to participate and become active adults themselves.

“These programs offer not only physical benefits, but also provide an opportunity for social interaction,” she noted.

The Active Adults program also offers field trips for seniors; past destinations included the Dutch Apple Theater in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and a walking tour of Odessa, Delaware. There are monthly lunch socials and a variety of exercise classes and educational programs.

For questions on future events, contact Wagner and Active Adults at (856) 478-0824 or email activeadults@harrisontwp.us.

“Whether you’re looking to unwind, improve flexibility, or simply connect with others, both chair yoga and chair strength training are fantastic options,” said Wagner.
