The Monroe police department’s fourth accreditation is a rare accomplishment. The force has had that status since 2014.
Only 8% of police departments earn accreditation four times from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP).
Monroe Township police now fall into that category.
Police Chief Craig Monohan announced the department’s reaccreditation at a township council meeting on Jan. 24 and posted the news on its social media page. The force has been NJSACOP accredited since 2014.
Reaccreditation verifies that Monroe police meet recognized professional best practices. Accreditation is an ongoing process that includes an on-site assessment by the NJSACOP every three years. It requires compliance with best practice standards in five areas of police functions: administrative, personnel, operations, investigative and arrestee/detainee.
Of more than 600 police departments in the state eligible for accreditation, only 54% have obtained it once; 32% twice; 19% three times; and less that 8% four times, according to the department.
“We would like to thank all of the employees of the Monroe Township Police Department and the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police for everyone’s involvement in this process,” said a department statement.
