Historical society host ’24 exhibit

The Mullica Hill Historical Society has chosen the topic taverns and temperance for an exhibit this year that will open on Saturday, April 6.

Among objects on display will be some from the society’s collection that have never been shown before, as well as loans from public and private collections. Hours will be 1 to 4 p.m., with a special tasting featuring Greenwich Teaburners Tea Company in Greenwich and Silver Feather Farms Herbal Teas in Pittsgrove.

According to the society, visitors will learn about a building at 7 South Main St. in the township that was constructed by the Stokes Union chapter of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) in 1885 and served as the chapter’s reading room. The chapter was active in fighting for repeal of liquor licenses and existed into the 1940s.

The society is requesting information from anyone who has knowledge of the chapter’s work and history.
