In an effort to create a vibrant space for teenage art enthusiasts, the Voorhees Art Commission will host the Love is in the Air teen dance party at the town center from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9.
Aimed at youth from 13 to 18, the event will include unique installations, music, dance and live performances to help showcase the richness of art and inspire teens to get more involved in artistic activities, as well as demonstrating that art knows no limits and can be expressed in various forms.
Gabrielle Horvitz – a commission advisor and director of the Voorhees Middle School drama club – shared her insights into how the event was inspired.
“We hope to provide a safe space for teens to go, have fun with their friends, and create new friendships all around the love for the arts,” she noted.
The teen party’s Love is in the Air theme was chosen to align with Valentine’s Day, but organizers emphasize it is not a couples event. Instead, the focus is on celebrating art while promoting self-love and friendship and an appreciation for the diverse experiences art can offer.
Attendees can expect a variety of activities and entertainment, including a “selfie” experience with balloon art installations and performances by 2023 Voorhees Got Talent finalists. A student I.D. is required to enter.
“We are truly providing all aspects of ‘art’ in a fun experience for teens, from dancing, music, live performances, gallery artwork and creative art installations for all to enjoy,” said Horvitz.
The Voorhees Art Commission has collaborated with local artists and township businesses to enhance the event experience, including the Illiano Events store and Days 2 Remember Pro party equipment rental service. Both were instrumental in creating the balloon installations and other elements of the dance party.
Along with art installations, party organizers have invited Jayz Crazed Confections in Haddon Township to provide sweet treats. Safety and inclusivity are also top priorities for the event, so commission chaperones, mall security and police will be on hand.
Horvitz expressed her hope that the dance party would foster togetherness among teens and help them share in the benefits of artistic expression, as well as celebrate artistic talents in Voorhees. To help with that, the Voorhees Art Commission is in the process of starting a teen board.
