The board of education took action Thursday, Jan. 4 to terminate its contract to purchase the lot and building at 144 Kings Highway West, originally intended to become an early-childhood center for kindergarten and preschool programs.

The decision was made with an eye on financial stewardship and timelines, as with every other step taken toward our goal of enhancing academics and improving the student experience. The purchase agreement was contingent on state approval for the acquisition by Dec. 31, which did not happen. The contract allowed termination if this contingency is not met.

The decision was not made lightly and did not come without regrets, as that new site offered the potential for program expansion and added space in our crowded elementary schools and at the high school. It will require the reconfiguration of plans for a bond referendum to address those needs and others.

The administration and board will continue to carefully consider options to meet the district’s needs within a fiscally conservative approach. Discussions will take place at public meetings, and the board will plan a specific meeting at which residents will be invited to share their thoughts.

Our commitment to keeping residents informed and engaged during every step in this process is unwavering.

Superintendent Chuck Klaus

Board of education President Jaime Grookett
