Deptford Township’s annual reorganization meeting on Jan. 3 saw the swearing in of three board members, including one returnee.
Joe McKenna will serve another term on the board, joined by newcomers Milton Corsey and Daniel McCurdy. All will serve three-year terms after winning election in November, and they took the oath from Gloucester County Commissioner Director Frank DiMarco.
“There is nothing more important than a solid educational system for our society and for Deptford Township,” said McKenna. “The value of quality education in our school system will move our students in to the next generation.”
Election votes for each candidate were revealed on the meeting’s agenda, which showed that a total of 16,489 residents voted for board candidates. McKenna got 3,809 votes, Corsey got 3,222 and McCurdy received 3,368.
“As a former professor at RCGC (Rowan College of Gloucester County), there were times when it was disheartening to see students who had not been prepared for the rigors of a college education,” Corsey noted. “To that end, my focus will be on ensuring that every graduate of our school system will have the necessary skills and understanding to successfully pursue their dreams, whether that be attending college or directly entering the workforce.”
“I believe that every child has the right to a quality education that prepares them for a successful future,” McCurdy observed. “I will be the voice for each student, parent and community member to ensure this becomes a reality in our school district.”
Corsey and McCurdy take the place of former board members Linda Rosser and Stacy Gray. Board president and vice president candidates were nominated during the meeting. McKenna was unanimously chosen for the top job, and board member Jim McDevitt was named vice president. Both held the same positions last year.
“Congratulations to returning President Joe McKenna, and to first-time board members Milton Corsey and Daniel McCurdy,” the school district posted on Facebook. “We would also like to thank outgoing board members Stacy Gray and Linda Rosser for their years of service to our district.”
“One area of concentration,” said McKenna,” is working with all school district personnel, the administration (and) our educators to ensure the best in education and educational opportunities for our students.
“I am a true Spartan and bleed black and gold. I will serve the community to the best of my ability.”
The next board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
