Rush Intermediate's Family Math and Literacy Night engages both kids and parents

The Rush Intermediate event is an annual undertaking that this year fell on Oct. 26.

It’s another year at Eleanor Rush Intermediate School and the school’s annual Family Math and Literacy Night on Oct. 26 once again filled the hallways and classrooms with learning activities.

Popping into different classrooms, students from grades three to five were able to use the skills and knowledge they’ve learned in class to complete the activities.

“It is a great chance for parents to see what is going on with their kids at school,” Principal Kerry DiSimone said. “It also gives the students a chance to show their parents just how much they have grown and learned.”

The school’s volunteers handed out a map and a Bingo card for students and their parents to complete as they tackled the activities, which included a therapy dog that third-graders had the year before and cafeteria snacks.

“Our math and literacy specialists have put this together so that we can invite the community and family to do fun activities based around the different things their kids are doing,” DiSimone explained. “This also gives a chance for both parents and students to realize that math and reading can be fun.”

As Math and Literacy night came to an end, it was clear the annual event will be around again.

“Parent involvement in their child’s education is paramount to their success,” DiSimone noted. “If a student is not getting that support at home and only receiving it here at school, there is a missing piece. We want the parents to feel welcome, come into the building and be a part of their children’s education.

“Parents are their child’s first teacher and will be their last teacher.”

Along with the evening’s activities, the school held its Scholastic book fair in the library. Parents and students browsed and had the opportunity to donate a book to a class.
