Families make art at library craft sessions

To give families, kids, teenagers and adults alike the chance to bond and be creative together, the Deptford library hosts its weekly family craft hour every Monday at 6 p.m.

Families create a variety of art pieces based around a particular theme. In the case of November, the theme is Thanksgiving.

“It is usually an easy craft that parents and children can sit down and do together,” said the library’s Susann Kaback. “In November, we will be making pilgrim marionettes, turkeys, a Native American bag and a candle centerpiece. I try not to make the craft to hard so that children and adults don’t get frustrated.”

Other themes throughout the year include Halloween and the Christmas holiday.

Materials needed to make the art pieces are provided by the library and the craft hour itself is free. Guests need not hold a library card and there is no registration necessary.

Other programs at the library include the Lego Club – where kids build whatever they wish using the library’s collection of pieces – and Make It-Take It classes for creations kids can take home. Kaback also hosts that event.

Adults can join coloring sessions meant to relieve stress and a crochet and knitting group meets twice a month on the first and third Saturday of every month.

“The Deptford free public library aims to be the heart of our community where we come together to learn, discover, create and connect,” says the vision statement on the library website. “The … library is a strong community providing services that unite people together, create and encourage lifelong learning.”
