In what is one of its largest fundraisers, Richwood United Methodist Church (UMC) will host the annual cookie sale and Christmas shop on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church’s Fellowship Hall. Proceeds benefit the church itself.

The practice started more than 25 years ago, according to church administrator Mildred Herman, and has steadily grown over the years. Anyone from the Mullica Hill community – whether or not church members – is welcome.

“It began about 25 years ago, well before our Fellowship Hall was completed,” she said. “I think it has grown each year since. The first year, we set up a few dozen cookies for sale in a Sunday school classroom. They quickly sold out. We moved to the Richwood Academy and had the sale there for a few years.”

Now, 300 boxes of cookies equal to about 1,000 dozen are sold, according to Herman. The homemade treats – at $14 a box – are usually baked a month before the sale by church members. This year’s baking will take place on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will also be cakes, pies and bread available at the sale.

The Christmas shop portion of the free church event will feature about 15 to 20 local vendors, according to Herman, selling a variety of crafts and other items. Vendor sales will be cash only.

“Now held in the (Fellowship) Hall, we feature thousands of pick-your-own homemade cookies sold by the pound, pre-boxed homemade cookies, a bake table with cakes, pies and breads for sale and 15 to 20 vendors who sell cash-and-carry gift items and crafts,” Herman noted.

“We also sell breakfast sandwiches and lunch items,” she added. “It is always well-attended, and often sells out. This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year.”

Neither the cookie sale nor the bazaar requires registration, but anyone interested in reserving a vendor spot can call Linda Fischer at (609) 319-3174.
