Mantua’s Chestnut Branch Park will get an addition in the form of a nine-hole   Frisbee golf course that will open sometime in October.

The project organizer is local resident Jim Kiel, who’s been working with his partner, Jason Moore, on surveying the land and drawing up plans. They teamed with the township and park officials Scott Hellerman and Ed Hollingsworth to   finish the project.

Mr. Kiel has been actively working at the park since early May, clearing the disc golf fairways as per the design,” said Mayor Robert Zimmerman. “His partner, Jason Moore, has been providing the surveying and drawings, plus weekend help when he’s available. Our park staff (Hellerman and Hollingsworth) have also been instrumental with the progress of this project.”

The course for Frisbee golf – also known as disc golf – will eventually have 18 holes, with the last nine expected in September of 2024, after the clearing of fallen trees in the area.

“According to Mr. Kiel,” Zimmerman noted, “the job has been a little more difficult than anticipated due to all the fallen trees in the wooded areas. Therefore, it has been decided to initially open as a nine-hole course this October, followed by an additional nine holes in 2024.”

The course does not yet have a name, which will be decided on after it is complete. Signs will eventually be placed at each hole.

The Frisbee golf course is one of many projects and improvements at Chestnut Branch Park, which serves as the township’s downtown. Earlier this year, it got new state-of-the-art trash cans and handicapped-accessible picnic tables, and rubber grounding is on the way.

“Mantua Township is very near and dear to my heart, and so is this park,” noted Committeewoman Eileen Lukens. “It’s an absolutely beautiful place where all our residents and guests can come and enjoy the festivities.”
