The Mantua public works department will collect certain household trash items at its garage every Saturday for the rest of the summer, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Convenience Center Dropoff – the next one is this Saturday – collects items that include used motor oil; yard waste like grass clippings, leaves and brush; and metal items such as refrigerators, grills and electronics. Dropoffs will continue on the fourth Saturday of each month after summer ends.

Bulk items – sofas, beds, furniture, rolled up carpets and bagged items –

that don’t get picked up during regular bulk collection on the first full week of each month can also be dropped off at the public works garage.

“It is another opportunity for residents to get rid of their bulk trash,” said Public Works Superintendent Glenn Demers. “It is supposed to make up for when residents don’t have anything for bulk pickup week.”

Items the township can’t collect are wood clippings, construction materials, bricks, concrete and hazardous materials. The latter come with a warning sign and are considered flammable, toxic, corrosive, explosive or reactive.

The county takes these items during its household special collection day events. The next one is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gloucester County Solid Waste Complex, 493 Monroeville Road in South Harrison Township.

The Mantua dropoff is open only to residents; proof of residency will be required on arrival. Contractors are not permitted and will be turned away.

“We have someone monitoring the whole situation,” Demers said. “He’ll check IDs and make sure the right stuff gets thrown out. He oversees everything that takes place.”

Information about proper waste disposal in other areas can be found on the township calendar which can be found on the Mantua Township website.
