The Deptford board of education held a special and unscheduled meeting on Aug. 1 to discuss and consider major personnel changes and approve building projects.

The personnel section of the session had 30 agenda items – including resignations, transfers and promotions – to be discussed. One new employee for the upcoming school year is District Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction and Vice Principal Kaitlin Kosmaczewski. Her family joined her at the meeting as her position was cited by the board.

“We’re welcoming a new member of our administrative team to the Deptford family,” said Superintendent Kevin Kanauss.

“I am so happy to be here,” Kosmaczewski replied.

As for buildings and grounds, five agenda items were unanimously approved:   demolition and construction of baseball dugouts at Deptford High, installation of new HVAC systems at Lake Tract Elementary, bleachers at Deptford Middle School and a purchase order for asphalt repaving of the district elementary schools and the high school.

Though not on the agenda, an update was provided at the meeting regarding the addition of security vestibules in the schools. According to Kanauss, that project is awaiting the district’s selection of a new contractor. Funds for the work are in the district budget.

Kanauss acknowledged participants at the board session for attending a meeting called on short notice.

“I want to thank you all for being here tonight,” he said. “This is very instrumental in keeping our summer moving along … We have a lot of projects stemming from our buildings and grounds and finance portion. So, thank you for taking the time to set up this meeting to keep the district functioning and moving in the correct direction over the summer.”

The next board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the board building at the back of the middle school.
